How to use it
- Enter your dog's current weight and pick the correct unit.
- Choose the closest age, neuter, or reproductive stage.
- Use the result as the calorie budget for food splitting, not as a one-food portion.
Estimate a dog's daily calorie target from weight, age, neuter status, activity, and feeding goal.
We first determine the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) using AVMA standards: RER = 70 * (weight in kg)^0.75. We then multiply RER by a factor corresponding to the dog's life stage, neuter status, and activity level (ranging from 0.8 for weight loss to 3.0+ for growing puppies or working dogs).
Spaying or neutering removes sex hormone production, which naturally slows down a dog's metabolic rate and decreases their voluntary physical activity. On average, a dog's daily energy requirement drops by 20-30% post-procedure, making calorie adjustment crucial to prevent obesity.
High-activity and working breeds (like hunting, herding, or agility dogs) can burn significantly more calories. Their daily multiplier can range from 2.0x to 5.0x RER depending on intensity. If your dog is highly active, monitor their body condition score (BCS) closely and adjust upwards if they show visible ribs.
Safe weight loss should be gradual, targetting 1% to 2% of their body weight per week. Under our 'Gradual weight loss' mode, the calculator applies a restriction of approximately 60-80% of their maintenance energy requirement. Never starve your dog; always consult a vet for severe obesity.
