Kitten Feeding Calculator & Portions

Calculate exactly how much food to feed a growing kitten by weight and life stage.

Food portion per day

How to use it

  • Enter your cat's current weight and select the unit (kg or lb).
  • Check your cat food packaging for the calorie density (e.g. 3800 kcal/kg, 380 kcal/cup, or 90 kcal/can).
  • Enter the meals per day to see the exact portion per feeding.

When to adjust

  • Kittens, pregnant, and lactating cats have extremely high energy demands that change weekly.
  • Indoor cats tend to have lower metabolic rates; monitor closely to prevent overfeeding.
  • Always weigh your portions instead of guessing; even an extra 5 grams of dry kibble can lead to weight gain in cats.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much food should I feed my cat per day?

A cat's daily food amount is determined by weight, age, activity level, and the caloric density of the food. An indoor neutered cat eating high-energy dry kibble needs very few grams compared to a cat eating wet food, which has much higher water content. Start with our calculation and monitor their body shape.

Why is weighing cat food so important?

Cats are small, so small feeding errors have huge impacts. For a 4kg cat, an extra 5-10 grams of dry food per day is the equivalent of a human eating an extra hamburger every day! Always use a digital kitchen scale for dry food to prevent obesity.

How many times a day should a cat eat?

Cats are natural nibblers and possess small stomachs. Feeding 2 to 4 small meals per day is highly recommended to prevent vomiting ('scarf and barf') and mimic their natural hunting rhythm. Kittens need at least 3-4 feedings daily.

Is wet food better than dry food for cats?

Wet food has distinct benefits: it contains roughly 70-80% water, which significantly supports hydration and reduces the risk of urinary tract issues and kidney stones. A mixed feeding plan (combining both dry kibble and wet food) is a great balance. You can use our food mix calculator to plan this.
